The term “I don’t wanna be your friend anymore” is now hitting the cyber-playground. A recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has indicated that people are taking more control of their online social lives. Facebook users of all ages are more active than a couple of years ago when it comes to auditing their friends list and taking control of what others are saying about them (aka ‘social pruning’).
Particularly interesting results:
- Women and younger users are more active in their social pruning activities – deleting friends and taking their names off photos others have posted
- Men are more likely to post something they later regret
- In general, people are more active in controlling their privacy settings than a couple of years ago
This study was carried out in America on American users. However, as we all know by now, being on the cyber-planet, the results could be indicative of global trends.
